India is getting a second government-sponsored tablet. The first model (the so-called Aakash) sold out in just a few days after it was launched online last week, but maker DataWind has already followed up with another 7-inch model, theUbislate 7. It was actually announced a few weeks back, but is now available for pre-order, priced at US$57 (US$10 more than the original Aakash), and features much better specs.

The Ubislate 7 comes with the following features:

  • Android 2.3 (Aakash: Android 2.2)
  • 7-inch touchscreen with 800×480 resolution
  • Cortex A8 – 700 MHz CPU (Aakash: Arm11 – 366MHz)
  • 3 hours battery life – thanks to the new 3200 mAh battery (Aakash: 2100 mAh)
  • Wi-Fi and GPRS connectivity (the Aakash was Wi-Fi only)
  • HD video playback
  • 256 MB RAM
  • one USB 2.0 port
  • 2GB internal storage, which can be expanded to 32GB via microSD

Customers in India can expect to lay their hands on the Ubislate next month. DataWind will produce, via QUAD Electronics in Hyderabad, about 1,000 units daily.

Researchers are developing ways to mass-produce tiny robots the size of a fly that operate like swarms of insects to collect data to aid in surveillance,
micromanufacturing, medicine, and more. Measuring in at under 4 mm square, the microbots have all the equipment necessary to move, communicate, and collect data, plus they generate all of their own power via solar panels.



These mini-robots are quite revolutionary, considering that they contain all that’s necessary to collect data and relay it back using one single circuit board. In the past single-chip robots have presented significant design and manufacturing challenges due in part to the use of solder as an adhesive. These new microbots use conductive adhesive to attach the components to a double-sided flexible printed circuit board using surface mount technology. The circuit is then folded into thirds and wrapped around the ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit).


On top, a solar cell generates power for the robot and delivers 3.6 V to the unit, which is enough for it to walk. Locomotion is achieved via three vibrating legs, while a fourth horizontal vibrating leg is used as a touch sensor. While a single microbot isn’t much use by itself, a large group of these mini-devices can establish swarm intelligence to generate more complex behavior. Computers receiving the data from all these swarming devices can then create a more realistic and complex picture. The project is based on the concept of I-SWARM (intelligent small-world autonomous robots for micro-manipulation), and was inspired by the behavior of insects.


Researchers from Sweden, Spain, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland are working hard on this new technology under a limited budget. Their recent attempts at fabrication of the solar powered bots showed that advances need to be made to the production process in order for them to be efficiently mass produced.

There are 7 billion people inhabiting the world today. In five years there will be 5.6 billion mobile devices sold – which means 80% of the current global population would each have a mobile device.
As it becomes cheaper to own a mobile phone, people without a lot of spending power will be able to do much more than they can today.

This Brookings Institute analysis from 2010 uses the World Bank 2005 PPP figures which probably understate China's PPP GDP by 27% versus updated Penn World Tables 7.0 numbers and India's by 13%.Correcting the PPP GDP figures would mean more people in China and India are middle class already and more will become middle class earlier.
