On December 7th, Joanna Shields, vice president and managing director of facebook EMEA announced that Facebook will introduce a new “Subscribe” button on a user’s profile. This was already available for pages since mid September, now it is available for user profiles too.

This subscribe button is available for user’s profiles. When a user clicks on “subscribe” all your public updates will be available to the user on his news feed, without you having to approve the request.

This does not mean that you have no control over who’s subscribing, you do have options to block subscribers. There is also no limit to the number of subscribers for the profiles.

Well, now while you create posts ensure that you select which are public posts and which are within closed loop. You will require to manage your public profile and friends within the same profile page.

The traditional “like” button allowed you to see some of the posts from the profile, however, this new subscribe button will make available all the public posts from the profile you subscribe to.

This is yet to be launched at some places, so if you are not seeing it on your pages, it will be there soon. Until then let us wait for the update to be rolled out to our profiles.

So, with the new subscription system introduced in Facebook since September, users are faces with a choice to either create a Facebook page or a profile. Well, there are no statistics that prove which works well for public figures, I would suggest try both (there are no negative effects after all.

Facebook has rolled out a new feature called "Suggested Events" that uses your account history to offer up events you might like in the real world.
A Facebook spokesperson reportedly confirmed that the feature even utilizes your frictionless music sharing data — all the better to direct you to that concert you didn't know was happening next week.

For brands, the feature provides another way for companies to engage with their audience, while also serving as a powerful incentive for businesses to solidify their presence on the site. It's also a check against services like Foursquare's Radar, which aggressively encourage specific types of activities — to the joy of businesses and brands — rather than simply recording check-in data. On the surface, it's ostensibly a boon for users — though with no clear way to remove a Suggested Event from the list, active users could quickly find useful information buried in a sea of social white noise. While Facebook claims the feature is in testing only, it has reportedly been rolled out to the entire user base.

[postlink]https://tenderhub.blogspot.com/2011/12/facebooktool-to-report-suicidal.html[/postlink]

Friends can report about suicidal behavior by clicking a report option next to any piece of content on the site and choosing suicidal content under the harmful behavior option, Facebook spokesman Frederic Wolens said.

Facebook will then email the user in distress a direct link for a private online chat with a crisis representative from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline as well as the group's phone number.

The new tool gives people who may not be comfortable picking up the phone a direct avenue to seek help.

"This was a natural progression from something we've been working on for a long time," Wolens said.

Users also have the ability to report suicidal behavior by going to the site's Help Center or search for suicide reporting forms. They can also use reporting links around the site.

Worried friends who reported the behavior will also receive a message to say it is being addressed, Wolens said.

Facebook, the most popular Web-based social networking site, has more than 800 million active users worldwide. The Palo Alto, California-based company was co-founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004.

The new suicide reporting tool will be made available to people who use Facebook in the United States and Canada.

Wolens said that all reporting on the site is done anonymously and so a distressed user will not know who reported the suicidal content.

Nearly 100 Americans die by suicide every day, according to the Surgeon General of the United States.

In 2012, Facebook will be making 45 privacy-related changes to comply with the recommendations of an audit by Ireland’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) released today. Below I’ve compiled a roadmap of all the changes Facebook will implement based on the the 149 pages of DPC recommendations and how the social network says it will address them.

First, read my analysis of the audit’s findings from this morning. It explains why these changes won’t seriously interfere with Facebook’s business model or product development. That’s very good news for Facebook. Still, complying with the audit’s recommendations could prevent the company from building a huge stockpile of historical data for some unknown later use.

The changes mostly deal with how long Facebook retains data, and how people are educated about Facebook’s usage of that data. Some will require engineering work, such as irrevocably deleting user data within 40 days of an account deletion request. Others will simply see Facebook adding additional links or messaging within the product to improve transparency and user understanding.

Facebook avoided having to make some big changes that could have hurt its business, such as needing users to explicitly opt in to ad targeting based on their personal data. It also won’t have to discontinue its facial recognition feature, or requires users to opt into having their content used in Sponsored Stories ads.

Here are the 45 changes Facebook will implement and their due dates:

Privacy and Data Use Policy

Simplify the explanations of its Data Use Policy- End of Q1 2012
Add a mechanism for controlling personal data to the registration process – End of Q1 2012
Increase the size of links to the privacy policy and statement of rights in the registration process -  End of February 2012
Add privacy policy, statement of rights, and Help Center links to the left side of the Facebook home page – End of February 2012
Advertising Use of User Data

Clarify how it employs user data in ad targeting to ensure full transparency – End of Q1 2012
Limit data collection from social plugins, restrict access to this data, and delete it on schedule, though social plugin data is not currently used in ad targeting – Immediately
Move option to opt out of having one’s content shown in social ads from the Account Settings to the Privacy Settings – End of Q1 2012
Prior to implementation, discuss any plans to provide individuals’ profile pictures and names to third parties for advertising purposes – Ongoing
Switch from retaining ad-click data indefinitely to a 2 year retention period – Review in July 2012

Anonymous Plans to Attack Facebook On 5 November

Anonymous a group of hacktivist is again in the news. They have threatened to destroy facebook on 5th November. This date 5 november is celebrated in remembrance of Guy Fawkes who in 1605 attempted the failed Gunpowder Plot — an attempt to blow up England’s House of Lords and kill King James I.

They have named it as Operation Facebook. They have decided to take down facebook due to Privacy policies. In a press release they stated

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your “privacy” settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you “delete” your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more “private” is also a delusion.Facebook knows more about you than your family.

Should You be Worried?

According to Anonymous Facebook Operation is not supported by all of its members. So,this attack is planned by few members of the group. Moreover they have given more then enough time to Facebook to fill up any loopholes in their security (if any).Earlier they started their own social network website called AnonPlus which got hacked by another group of hackers (lol). This clearly indicates that there’s nothing much to worry.
